Towards Co-Creating Neurodiverse Tech Workplaces: Unlocking Potential Through Employer Training

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 201

Abstract

This study examines the impact of a workshop to educate employers about neurodiversity and the potential of neurodiverse youth with computer science backgrounds. Workplace leaders (N = 111) participated in our training and a survey about the main characteristics and expectations of entry-level job candidates in computer science. Results indicate a statistically significant shift among the participants in the attitudes towards these neurodivergent behaviors. Our study demonstrates the potential of a short-term intervention presented as an educational workshop to make a shift in the perception of individuals responsible for hiring job candidates who identify as neurodivergent. Implications suggest that interactive training encourages reflection and neurodiverse group connection building that might initiate a shift in attitude and interest.
