Abstract

Relational inclusivity emphasizes the significance of relationships among students, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), in mainstream educational settings. This study investigates elementary students' perspectives on the importance of friendships within the context of relational inclusivity. Through a qualitative case study design, 21 semi-structured interviews were conducted with 4th graders in a diverse Southern California school. Findings highlight the critical role of friendships in fostering a sense of belonging, emotional support, and academic collaboration, while also countering bullying and enhancing mental health. This research underscores the need for actively cultivating inclusive and supportive relationships to promote relational inclusivity and overall student well-being.
