You Can’t Just Throw Money at It: The Impact of Institutional Grants on Study Abroad

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3F

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of IDEAS grants in increasing study abroad participation at U.S. higher education institutions, particularly those serving underrepresented student populations. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we analyzed data from 2010-2019 to assess the impact of receiving a grant on study abroad participation rates. Despite the intended goals, results indicate no significant increase in participation among grant-receiving institutions. This raises critical questions about current funding strategies and underscores the need for more comprehensive approaches to improving participation rates. Our findings contribute to the theme of “Research, Remedy, and Repair: Toward Just Education Renewal” by highlighting potential inefficiencies and the importance of equity-focused educational practices.
