Teacher Perceptions of the Importance of Supervisor Qualities Displayed in the Post-observation Conference

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 203

Abstract

A post-observation conference is typical in the instructional supervision process. Teacher perceptions of supervisors' qualities during these conferences influence how well teachers implement classroom recommendations. This study surveyed teachers in three states to assess the importance of seven supervisory qualities identified in the literature and reviewed by an expert panel. Forty-seven indicators of these qualities were rated by teachers on a four-point scale. A large number of teachers rated the following qualities as very important: knowledge of generic teaching skills, authenticity, ability to present meaningful data, and relational trust. This study will assist supervisors and university faculty in better understanding teacher perspectives on effective supervisory qualities foundational to teacher growth.
