Role of Empowering School Leadership in Adolescents’ Engagement

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Based on the theories of empowering leadership and upper echelons, the research examines the question: “How do school principals as empowering leaders affect students’ engagement in the school?” using data from three sources: 317 homeroom teachers, 6589 middle-school students and 504 teachers from 64 Arab middle schools in Israel. Results showed that empowering school leadership impacts students’ affective and behavioral engagement through homeroom teachers’ engagement. Collaboration between homeroom teachers and their class teachers did not serve as moderator between homeroom teachers’ engagement and students’ engagement.
