Abstract

Agricultural education encompasses learning in plant, animal, and environmental sciences and relevant technology, business, and mechanics, which occurs in multiple sites such as classrooms, youth organizations, and pathway programs to STEM/agriculture-related careers. Multilingual learners’ engagement with STEM education has been a focal area of research for the past decade. However, limited research on the intersection of multilingual learners and agricultural education exists, especially considering the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in rural communities. This study examines agriculture educators’ experiences and perspectives on teaching multilingual learners in a large agriculture-producing state. Findings from surveys and interviews reveal a lack of preparation and a need for professional development for agricultural educators while highlighting their unique positions in connecting with multilingual learners.
