Demystifying the Potential of Curriculum and Instruction Doctorate Programs in Türkiye in Strengthening Research Capacity

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 107

Abstract

Regarding Bernstein et al.’s two competencies expected of doctorate graduates, namely technical and contextual intelligence and transferable skills, this study aims to investigate the potential of curriculum and instruction (C&I) doctorate programs in Türkiye in strengthening students’ research capacities. This qualitative document analysis examined the curricula of C&I doctorate programs provided by graduate schools at 12 public research universities and seven young universities in Türkiye. Findings revealed that the curricula of C&I doctorate programs at research and young universities were designed to concentrate on students’ technical intelligence/skills, with less emphasis on substantive/theoretical knowledge and transferable skills. Furthermore, course titles in numerous research and young universities’ C&I doctorate programs are similar, if not identical.
