Abstract

Compare associations between school policing, school discipline, and depressive symptoms among adolescent girls.

Data from the FFCWS was used to understand the association between school policing, school discipline, and depressive symptoms, with an OLS regression analyses. The predictor variables were measured using school policing and school discipline variables. The dependent variable was depressive symptoms. Adjusted models included demographics and school connectedness variables.

Security guards regularly stationed at school was associated with lower depressive symptoms among Black girls. Respondents who saw someone stopped by school police and experienced school discipline were associated with higher depressive symptoms among Black girls. Being discipline was associated with higher depressive symptoms among Latinx girls.

Social control and policing adversely influence Black and Latinx girls.
