Abstract

The number of public charter schools in the U.S. has surged in the past decade due to their autonomy and flexibility compared to traditional public schools. However, the impact of these benefits on teachers is unclear, with higher turnover rates reported in charter schools. This study examines charter school teacher retention rates in South Carolina and compares them to non-charter schools, focusing on working conditions. Using the Jobs Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, we surveyed 5,428 PK-12 teachers. Results showed no significant difference in retention rates between the two groups. However, charter school teachers experienced fewer demands and perceived higher parental support, highlighting both notable differences and surprising similarities in their working conditions.
