Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Objectives
Today’s adolescents are coming of age during an era of significant economic, social, and health inequalities, disparities were laid bare during the COVID-19 pandemic, as young people from lower socioeconomic, Latinx, and immigrant backgrounds disproportionately experienced disruptions to their learning. The research team, in collaboration with academic and community-based partners across the state, launched the Thriving Youth Study, a mixed methods study that seeks to understand how young people across California are coping after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Framework
We are only beginning to understand how COVID19 pandemic, growing economic inequalities, and the contentious political climate have altered contemporary youths’ transitions to adulthood (Turner 2021; US Department of Health and Human Services). Specifically, we are learning how recent events are shaping the well-being, education, labor market experiences, and civic engagement of young people.

Methods
We are surveying young adults 18-34 years old across California to learn more about their education, labor market, health, and civic outcomes. The survey aims to offer the opportunity to high school and community college students to participate in a community-engaged research project.

Findings
Initial findings from the Oxnard site reveal the critical importance of preparatory programming that readies students to enroll in a four-year college and/or channels them into a good job. Young adults in Oxnard require information, academic support, job training, and leadership development to create a better life for themselves and their families. These young residents can significantly benefit from tailored opportunities designed to address financial stability and well-being.
