Abstract

This paper examines RMSEA cutoff adjustments made by equivalence testing and dynamic fit index cutoffs and demonstrates a combined method that makes both adjustments simultaneously. Monte Carlo simulation was used to demonstrate the behavior of the three methods under controlled conditions. The combined method adjusted for loading magnitude and reflected sample size adjustments of both equivalence testing and dynamic fit index cutoffs in the conditions studied. The combined method effectively reconciled equivalence testing and dynamic fit index cutoffs for RMSEA to simultaneously account for a variety of extraneous circumstances known to affect global model fit evaluation in confirmatory factor analysis.
