Developing a Shared Vision for Family-School Collaboration With Families and Schools

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to co-create goals for family-school collaboration with families and schools. Families and school professionals from four schools in a large urban school district in the Southeastern U.S. participated. Families and school professionals collaborated to identify barriers they experienced to family-school collaboration and current family-school practices. They then developed shared goals for family-school collaboration that reflect their values and address barriers they have experienced over time. Goals families and school professionals identified focused on two-way communication, family support for culturally-responsive parenting, shared decision making, and emphasizing the voices and perspectives of racially minoritized families and families who do not speak English. These goals served as the basis for families and schools to create action steps.
