HSI Student Leadership: Countering the Dominant Leadership Narrative

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

The purpose of this presentation will be to explore an embedded case study of a Latine student leadership workshop at a large public HSI in the Northeast. The HSI Student Leadership workshop served 19 Latine student leaders representing over five distinct Latine Student organizations. Utilizing the HSI intersectional consciousness framework (Vega et al., 2022) that includes tenets such as learning to collaborate across the university, reflecting and creating communities with different minoritized groups, and engaging in a critical race mindset to counter panethnicization of Hispanic/Latine groups, findings include positive intragroup Latine leader engagement; learning from diverse Latine perspectives; and intentional engagement and collaboration across the university to create a Latine space on an HSI campus.
