Explicating Conservative U.S. Higher Education Policies That Affect International Students (Poster 11)

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

As a scholar from abroad, I am deeply alarmed by how such conservative higher education policies affect the international student community, considering how we contribute to the diversity and economy at U.S. universities. This paper will provide a critical discourse analysis of anti-DEI legislation with Ohio SB 83 as an exemplary case and with international students in mind. With this, I explicated the possible legal issues of the bill and its implications on freedom of expression and international student admissions, retention, discrimination, and student services. I aim to provide a voice and unique perspective for international students in these politically charged times in U.S. higher education.
