Adversity or Opportunity: A Time-Series Analysis of Hiring Minoritized Leaders During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Despite growing interest in diverse school leadership, little is known about the timing and frequency of hiring minoritized leaders. We analyzed the likelihood of minoritized school leader appointments before and after the pandemic. We also examined which schools are more likely to hire minoritized leaders and when. We utilized the Data and Analysis for School Leadership database (a product of the National Association of Independent Schools). By using a single-group interrupted time series model and logit regression, both with and without fixed effects, we have confirmed the significant increase in the appointment of minoritized leaders in the academic year 2019–2020. Our analysis also shows that teacher attrition and the financial challenges of students increase minority leader appointments.
