Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 111

Abstract

This study investigates the state of outdoor and nature-based learning programs for young children in Canada, focusing on program characteristics, pedagogies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the well-documented benefits of outdoor play, Canada faces challenges in adhering to physical activity guidelines, exacerbated by the pandemic's mental health impacts on children. Through an online survey of 140 respondents, the study reveals diverse program features and geographical distribution, with notable representation from Ontario and British Columbia. Preliminary findings indicate increases in program modifications and mental health challenges, as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This research contributes to understanding the benefits and challenges of nature-based programs, aligning with AERA’s 2025 theme of addressing educational societal challenges.
