It's Not "Just Basic Biology": Biology Instructor Conceptions of Nature as Related to LGBTQ+ Humans

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3G

Abstract

Research indicates LGBTQ+ students face challenges in STEM fields, including lower completion rates and poorer mental health compared to cisgender, heterosexual peers. Biology, with its diverse examples of sex determination and sexual behavior, could offer inclusive content that supports LGBTQ+ identities. This study examines how undergraduate biology instructors conceptually relate these examples to human society and LGBTQ+ issues. Through semi-structured interviews with 14 U.S. biology instructors, we found that many instructors acknowledge the importance of diverse biological examples, but they face challenges related to institutional, political, and personal barriers. Instructors express an understanding that they are partially responsible for establishing societal norms surrounding biology topics. This research aims to inform strategies for enhancing biology education and inclusivity for LGBTQ+ individuals.
