Enhancing Environmental Science Education With Culturally Sustaining Practices: A Case Study

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This case study explores two environmental science educators' experiences with culturally sustaining pedagogical (CSP) strategies learned from a three-year CSP-focused professional development program. Data from semi-structured interviews analyzed inductively revealed three key themes: Transformative Instructional Practice, Enhanced Cultural Competence and Pedagogical Knowledge, and Advocacy for Culturally Sustaining Practices. Teachers reported significant improvements in their instructional methods, including providing students with more choices, integration of cultural contributions, and greater collaboration opportunities. They noted enhanced cultural awareness and a commitment to seeking culturally relevant content for their classrooms. They emphasized the need to reinforce CSP principles and share practices with other teachers. The study recommends ongoing CSP education and collaboration with school districts to ensure equitable and sustained access to training.
