Exploring Internalizing Problems in Neurotypical Siblings of Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Meta-Analytic Perspective

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 601

Abstract

The present meta-analysis examined internalizing problems in neurotypical siblings of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD-Sibs). Using a multivariate random-effects model, the study confirmed that IDD-Sibs experience moderately higher internalizing problems than typically developing siblings. Preliminary moderation analyses showed that age, gender, and sample diversity did not significantly affect this relationship. Most included studies lacked critical demographic information (e.g., race/ethnicity, language, SES), aggregating participants into perceived "homogeneous" groups. This oversight is problematic (e.g., Annamma et al., 2013; Crenshaw, 1991) and highlights the need for inclusive research practices and formative (e.g., Engeström, 2011) support systems based on IDD-Sibs' unique needs. The study calls for re-envisioning methodologies to achieve a holistic understanding of diverse family members in the IDD community.
