Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the number of repertoire that students actively engage with in elementary general music classes. The research questions that guide this study are as follows: What number of repertoire do students actively engage with in elementary general music classes? How do these numbers change over various grade levels? Between grade levels? Among pedagogical approaches?
In this quantitative inquiry, I used a general music pedagogical lens with special attention on active music making in repertoire. While general music does not necessarily require a teacher to be certified in a particular pedagogical approach, many are (Svec, 2017). For this study, active engagement with repertoire will be defined in three ways: singing, playing, and moving.
