“Am I Not Mexican Enough?”: Examining Latinx Students’ Experiences With Microaggressions

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2D

Abstract

Latinx students frequently experience microaggressions in Midwest secondary schools, often unnoticed by the students themselves due to systemic and institutional racism. This study employs a framework developed by Pérez Huber and Solorzano (2015a) to examine Latinx students' experiences of microaggressions in these settings. Utilizing narrative inquiry and gathering testimonios through semi-structured interviews, the research identifies various microaggressions, including linguistic, non-verbal, insults, and discrediting behaviors, as well as student reactions. The findings have significant implications for educators, including pre-service and in-service teachers, school administrators, and staff members.
