Amid the ongoing, polarized debate amongst adults about whether/how to discuss race with young people this ethnographic, participatory study critically examines ways race matters to 14–17-year-olds living in the rural Inland Northwest. Throughout five weekly summer sessions, youth co-researchers gathered to reflect on and discuss the ways that race is salient (or not) in their everyday lives as they learned from and supported one another. Findings center stories about race and racism in and beyond school places, highlighting the diverse experiences present in our rural community, alongside youth-created recommendations for teachers and schools that can be taken up for the benefit of students and families in urban, suburban, and rural contexts.
