"And It Don't Stop": Power Moves at the University of California, Los Angeles

Sun, April 27, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 403

Abstract

The field of hip hop studies has exponentially grown within higher education over the past 50 years of the culture’s existence. As a culturally sustaining pedagogy (Paris & Alim, 2017), hip hop has particularly impacted the UCLA campus–from being among the first institutions to organize a hip hop conference (Osumare, 2008) to hosting residencies with renowned artists like Chuck D (Wolf, 2022). Despite this rich history, the hip hop studies phenomena on the UCLA campus has yet to be comprehensively studied, and more importantly, archived. This project will remedy the gap by documenting one particular event in UCLA hip hop history: the 1999 Power Moves Conference.
