Abstract

In the contemporary era of mass communication imagery and narratives of violence permeates our culture. Technologically integrated youth thus grow up in a culture where stories of violence are shared globally and instantaneously. This phenomenological qualitative study examines how exposure to stories of violence through digital media informs youth’s notions of collective responsibility. The social democratic value of collective responsibility interpreted from Chicana feminist perspectives complicates traditional western understandings of civic life and guide us towards a real politics of global interdependence and solidarity that centers our connection to each other and the more than human world.
