Abstract

Although past research has identified strong relationships between early number sense and future mathematics performance, the association with subdomains of number sense is not well understood. Therefore, this study investigates the longitudinal impact of these subdomains (numbers, relations and operations) on the mathematical performance of Brazilian children. This proposal holds international significance, particularly in light of Brazil’s consistently low performance of students’ mathematical knowledge. 85 children were evaluated in kindergarten and then in first grade. The participants belonged to 5 public schools located in four cities in southern Brazil. We used two instruments: Number Sense Brief - NSB and Test of Early Mathematics Ability - TEMA-3.
