Session Type: Symposium
This symposium session invites AERA members into an important and growing conversation about the intersections between immigration and education in the U.S. (Author & Author, 2019). The five papers, and discussant remarks, highlight research-based perspectives from several recent and ongoing educational studies conducted across the country examining the ways in which federal and state immigration policies shape teaching and learning in K-16 public school settings. The authors take a critical lens centering the perspectives of adults and immigrant youth working to create spaces/ethics of care for immigrant communities. The findings show––that despite legal precedents securing the rights of undocumented, non-citizen, and immigrant-origin students to a public elementary and secondary education—educators, parents, and youth continue to fight for educational equity.
