Centering Affect and Emotion Toward Justice and Dignity in Science Education

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2A

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

This structured poster session brings together authors contributing to a special issue focused on affect and emotion in science learning across a range of contexts. The motivating question is: How might science education researchers expand the study of affective and emotional phenomena in ways that afford a better understanding of human learning experiences, support conditions of justice, and affirm learners’ dignity? The eight posters in this session represent different approaches to these issues in science education--from K-12 students, to educators, to historical perspectives, providing a unique opportunity for cross-talk across contexts. Through discussion across posters and with attendees, we will collectively identify important syntheses and disjunctures in the theories and pedagogies associated with affect and emotion in science education.
