Portraits of Growth: How Novice Social Studies Teachers Develop as Discussion Facilitators

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2H

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium presents a robust portrait of novice social studies teacher development in discussion facilitation. Drawing from a longitudinal data set comprising 190 classroom videos from two consecutive cohorts of preservice secondary social studies candidates from two university-based teacher education programs through their first three years of classroom instruction, we ask, broadly: What does learning to facilitate discussion look like for novice social studies teachers? The papers apply mixed methods, leveraging a newly developed and validated observation tool (the Social Studies Discourse Instrument) in conjunction with a theoretical model of learning as a complex dynamic process of identity development (Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity). We draw implications for teacher education and professional development focused on discussion facilitation.
