Session Type: Symposium
“[assuming]...categories such as white, Native American, [Asian, etc.] and Black as being entirely separate from or outside of what it means to be Latinx, … is at best ahistorical (Irizarry, Monk & Cobb 2023)."
What are the unintended consequences of treating Latinx/Hispanics as a de facto racial category? How can we make visible the experiences and outcomes for AfroLatinos/Black Latinos in Education Research? What are the policy and practice implications of illuminating complex education outcomes for Black Latinos? We focus the federal statistical policies and directives that shape race and ethnicity data collection and provide empirical analysis of complex inequities for AfroLatinos. The session ends with guiding principles for engaging in equity-minded policy work that centers Black Latinos.
