Fostering Complexity in the Conceptualization and Study of Motivation, Engagement, and Self-Regulated Learning: A Workshop

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 711

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

Motivation, engagement, and self-regulated learning (SRL) scholars increasingly recognize that these phenomena are complex: they are dynamic, nonlinear, and contextual; they reflect interdependencies among factors; and they manifest heterogeneity between and within individuals and variability over time. However, prevalent conceptualizations and research methods in graduate training and in published research do not capture this complexity. Consequently, many researchers who want to conceptualize and investigate these phenomena in their complexity lack knowledge and skills for such pursuits. This workshop will provide participants with worked examples of complexity studies of motivation, engagement, and SRL, guide them in conceptualizing their own phenomenon-of-interest as complex, and scaffold their understanding of methodologies for studying these phenomena as such.
