Session Type: Symposium
This symposium explores how gender, family demands, and family-responsive policies influence educators' career trajectories. It highlights the challenges faced by teacher-parents and investigates the impact of caregiving responsibilities on their career decisions. Together, the four papers provide evidence that existing social inequalities in caregiver expectations are replicated within the education workforce, particularly for women who face unequal social expectations for caregiving and who face "motherhood penalties" at work after having children. Findings from the papers will collectively inform the creation of policies and conditions to support teacher-parents and mitigate post-pandemic teacher turnover and shortages.
