Session Type: Symposium
This interactive symposium uses a “World Café” to reflect on and be inspired by Jeannie Oakes’ ideas and legacy. The heart of this session will be facilitated discussions at a dozen different tables. Each table will focus on a different major theme from Oakes’ work, such as teacher education, public scholarship, or detracking. The world café approach will allow us to have a series of three 15-minute rounds of small-group conversations. We’ll initially reflect on Oakes’ impact on the work in the area of a table’s theme. We’ll then explore the parts of her work in this area that most urgently need to be brought into the future. Finally, we’ll consider how each of us, and all of us as a community, can build on her call for research to make a difference. While this session is a memorial for Jeannie Oakes, it’s also a chance for us to use our grief, sadness, memories and gratitude as motivation for celebrating and advancing her legacy.
