Supporting Student Reading-Readiness in Community College Career Technical Education

Sun, April 24, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Career and Technical Education Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

What does it mean to be college-ready for the reading demands in Career Technical Education (CTE)? This was the impetus for the series of studies to be discussed in this session. After providing a detailed explanation of the method used for these literacy audits, presenters will provide findings from across the studies. Overall, evidence has identified a lack of alignment between the range of institutional, disciplinary, and even social assumptions for ‘college readiness’ (specific to literacy) and actual expectations. Thus, it is important to note that college-ready for reading is a conceptually mixed construct, varying by institution, discipline/area/field, and even instructor.
