The development of young children often emphasizes the importance of the learning environment and outlines specific characteristics to help ensure student success. However, as students progress in schools, this critical pedagogical component is often ignored. The influence of a positive learning environment that supports student growth and learning cannot be underestimated when working with adolescent learners. This exploratory mix-methods case study investigates the intentionality of changing the learning environment to increase student understanding about their African-American heritage. The results from this study indicate more teacher resources about African-American history are needed, intentionality of learning environments can positively impact school climate, and learning environments (if not constructed well), can hinder student learning and negatively impact their development of self.
