Advancing Equity Practices in Academic Spaces: Evaluating Employee Training Outcomes and Readiness to Respond to Microaggressions

Abstract

Microaggressions create uncomfortable work conditions and impact job satisfaction and retention for academic professional staff and faculty from minoritized groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic and at the tilt of the Black Lives Matter Movement, scholars at a predominately white institution (PWI) in the northeast, conducted a quantitative study. Data was collected based on survey results from a series of online workshops titled “Responding to Microaggressions in the Workplace' Data was collected from faculty, staff, and student employees (N=111) to measure perceptions of readiness to respond to microaggressions. Findings indicate a heightened understanding of microaggressions, employees' readiness to respond in academic settings.
