Classroom Community and Time: Comparing Student Perceptions in Traditional Versus Accelerated Online Courses

Sun, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Research suggests that building community online can improve learning and retention. However, developing a sense of community takes intentional effort and time. Questions remain whether a sense of classroom community can be developed in online courses offered accelerated terms. In this session we will present the results of our inquiry into comparing student perceptions of classroom community in accelerated 7-week online courses vs. 15-week online courses. We will conclude with implications for research and practice.
