Paulo Freire and the Jesuit Educational and Intellectual World in Chile (1964–1969): A Collateral Relationship

Abstract

In 1964 Paulo Freire was exiled from Brazil, arriving in November of that year in Chile, where he would remain until 1965. Although his work during those five years have been previously studied, less space has been given to studying his relationship with one of the most powerful educational and intellectual poles of those years: the Jesuit order or the Society of Jesus. From a social and political standpoint, few like the Jesuits had that much power during the sixties. This article examines his participation in various works of the Society of Jesus in Chile. This study is based on interviews and literature review and provides evidence on the collateral nature of the relationship between Freire and the Jesuits.
