Peeling Back the Layers of Attempted Genocide: A Canadian Exemplar

Abstract

This paper asserts Bourdieu’s mandate for social scientists to “illuminate mechanisms of domination” and acknowledges the need to redress treatment of indigenous populations worldwide. Drawing on the 2016 report of the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, it describes the efforts of the Canadian government through “residential schooling” to eradicate Indigenous culture and assimilate Canadian First Nation peoples into White Christian society. It then describes how the elementary school of two young White students promotes both the study Anishinaabi language and culture and the discussion of sensitive issues in order to promote understanding, healing, and reconciliation and to create a more equitable and inclusive Canadian society. The lessons learned suggest the need for similar understanding and action on a global basis.
