Mother Pedagogies of Migration: Multiplicitous Identities and Pedagogies

• In Event: Mothers, Families, and Communities Enacting and Rethinking Pedagogies During COVID-19 and Beyond

Abstract

We unpack Indigenous and Latinx mothers’ pedagogies as Mother Pedagogies of Migration (MPM). To do so we put in conversation two ethnographic collaboration with mothers—a) a collaboration with Mexicana campesinas (farmworker womxn) in the Yakama Nation who use agricultural land as a context for teaching and learning, and b) a school-university collaboration with a community of Indigenous Maya womxn from Yucatan and Latina mothers to engage in language and culture revalorization at a K-5 school in San Francisco. To discuss MPM, we highlight two pedagogical elements—relationality and indeterminacy—as central to mothers’ praxis. We show through MPM how mothers are simultaneously challenging and re-working-imposed knowledge systems and identities to grow, be, and become with each other and their children.
