Principal Preparation Programs as Third Spaces: Developing a Framework for Emerging Leaders

Abstract

Using postcolonial theories of the borderland , this two-year case study examines principal preparation programs (PPP) as “in-between” spaces where emerging leaders can deconstruct current oppressive leadership models to create environments with diversity, equity, and inclusion at their core. Via focus group interviews, we developed the following themes: (1) inclusion or feeling included, (2) multiple perspectives, (3) holistic approaches, and (4) culture and climate and we utilized these to help us further develop our PPP as a third space and to discuss partnerships with districts that can better support emerging leaders in creating similar inclusive spaces for teachers, students, and their families. Our goal is the development of a framework for leadership that can catalyze inclusive changes in K-12 education.
