Cross-Pollination Through Collaboration: CSP/UDL Lesson Planning Across Methods Courses

Abstract

This study investigates a joint assessment to bridge anti-racist, inclusive teaching across two methods courses as an approach for pre-service teachers to learn about asset pedagogies and apply that knowledge to literacy lesson planning. Drawing on scholarship in DisCrit, CSP and UDL to design the assessment, we asked participants to incorporate and annotate differentiation, co-teaching, and anti-racist literacy practices in a lesson plan for writer’s workshop. Analysis suggested that, despite instruction in inclusion, institutional discourses about disability and segregation still persisted. Students found annotating lesson plans for examples of antiracist pedagogy more challenging than identifying inclusive practices. Findings indicate that novice teachers need support to understand how asset-informed teaching practices can simultaneously benefit students with different learning profiles.
