Abstract

In 2004, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was reauthorized to uphold the promise of a free appropriate public education (FAPE) that is inclusive and equitable for students with dis/abilities. Schools have seemingly improved their attention to the needs of students with dis/abilities; however, the prevalence of ableist ideology continues to undermine equitable education for students with physical and cognitive access needs (Rauscher & McClintock, 1996; Ferri & Connor, 2007). In this research paper we analyze the policies and active shooter curricula of several large school districts in the states of Colorado, Georgia, and Oregon, emphasizing the ways that ableist ideology within these policies marginalizes dis/abled students and reifies inequitable education.
