United Playaz (UP) is a program in San Francisco which offers a comprehensive grassroots violence prevention and youth leadership development program in various schools and detention centers. With a main purpose “to stop violence and enforce education” (Watson, 2012, p. 47), UP facilitates weekly meetings and outreach efforts in a community that is entrenched in sad, heart-wrenching street violence. UP leaders have implemented their work through alluding to themes of love and God, a call to “upset the setup”, and sourcing their solutions from youth instead of trying to change them.
