Teachers' Perceptions of Students' Social Capabilities: Cooperative Learning the Key to Thriving in the 21st Century

Abstract

Capabilities or skills that are an important part of schooling have had growing interest over the past few years. There is also increasing importance in examining the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century and look at how educators can develop learning environments to enable the development of these skills. This paper focuses on examining students’ social skills, known as capabilities in the primary years of schooling and how teachers perceive their social capabilities. The focus of this research was situated in a wider research study that investigated cooperative learning as a culturally responsive pedagogy in primary teachers’ classrooms in Sweden, England and Australia. This paper examines responses to a short survey given to teachers in these three countries.
