Conceptualising and Capturing the Impact of Scalable Clinical Leadership Professional Development

Abstract

Frontline doctors' clinical leadership has been offered as the solution to problems of health systems worldwide, further growing in significance during/post-pandemic. Despite wide consensus regarding the need for clinical leadership development, there is limited evidence of effectiveness of much clinical leadership professional development. Moreover, new more scalable forms of clinical leadership professional development provision need to be developed and evaluated alongside the traditional intensive programmes. Drawing on sociocultural and activity theoretical understandings of professional learning and policy analyses of clinical leadership, this mixed methods study analyses the learning outcomes of a less-intensive and remotely offered clinical leadership professional development course, and compares those to learning outcomes on a more intensive in-person version. Implications for research and policy are discussed.
