Abstract

The need for systemic reform has become increasingly evident in the wake of the recent social and political strife. Medical education is not immune to these needed reforms as training culturally sensitive providers has recently grown as a priority. Even so, cultural competency remains an understudied construct in medical education. As such, questions linger in the field about how best to measure cultural competency in learners and how best to develop curricula that advance cultural competence. Leveraging archival data, the purpose of this paper is to: (1) examine viable ways for implementing cultural competence and implicit bias training in health care; and (2) discuss the affordances and challenges of implementing such training in medical education settings.
