Trends and Considerations in Mixed-Methods Research Sampling: A Methodological Study

Abstract

Sampling is a critical component of a study as it impacts various stages of the research process and overall generated inferences. In mixed methods research (MMR), issues of sampling are further exacerbated given the integration of the quantitative and qualitative strands and the sampling decisions made for each component. Mixed methods research sampling designs have been developed, but there is limited research examining the prevalence and characteristics of sampling designs in MMR. A systematic methodological review was used to explore the prevalence of MMR sampling designs and schemes across the health sciences and highlight specific examples that warrant further methodological considerations. Recommendations are provided to the MMR field that transfer across various domains including health sciences and education.
