Community-Mindedness: Toward Theoretical Praxis of Classroom Community-Building for the Culture

Fri, April 22, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Community-minded classroom communities do not exist or develop automatically. It takes intentional nurturing by teachers to transform classroom spaces into places where Black students want to be. Unfortunately, while many new teachers of Black students are expected to create positive classroom communities, few bring the moral consciousness or skill in leveraging helpful culturally relevant approaches towards the goal of community-well-being. Thus there is great need in exploring the instructional decisions, pedagogical strategies, and classroom experiences of literacy teachers who are effective, particularly those who work successfully with culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
