Strengthening Family-School Partnerships in Distance Learning and Beyond: Examining Practices of Authentic Relationships-Building

Abstract

Drawing on family-school partnership frameworks, this study shares findings from a research practice partnership with 31 teachers across 14 schools in a large urban school district in California. We analyze data from teacher surveys and interviews in addition to interviews with families. The main findings reveal six categories of practices between families and teachers that build authentic relationships and strengthen family-school partnerships. Furthermore, new forms of communication between teachers and parents led to other outcomes such as providing caregivers’ with a more direct view into their child’s learning and greater empathy between families and teachers. This work has significant implications for how schools can move forward to leverage these practices to have stronger family-school partnerships in distance learning and beyond.
