Abstract

Via Critical Race Theory and Rowley’s (2014) purposeful socialization for students of color, this study critically examines the ways that Black men experience and make meaning of identity and institutional sense of belonging and socialization in a targeted recruitment program for historically excluded demographics within doctoral programs at a predominantly white institution. Through semi-structured interviews, participants provided their understandings, navigation, and contestations of the values, goals, and norms of the program and within the university.
